I'm new here, so please forgive the fact that I'm posting comments that I posted elsewhere earlier today. The subject is equally relevant here.
I've been relatively quiet in support of my candidate until today. I'd mentioned my support for Rick Santorum several times during the past few months. Since most everyone here had made other selections, my commentary has been pretty-much relegated to discussing them. Most folks have dismissed Santorum as being an unrealistic choice. I don't believe that! I believe that he has a 50/50 chance of being the GOP nominee, and I'll explain how I believe he can be.
First, and most importantly, his showing in Iowa must be better than anticipated, and by that I mean he must finish in the top 3 or 4. With a finish like that in Iowa, he'd receive some small amount of increased support in New Hampshire, perhaps enough to get him into the top 3 or 4 there too. With two moderately-competitive finishes, he'll be headed to South Carolina. I have suspicions about what may happen prior to the SC primary if Rick has performed as I described in Iowa and NH...... I believe he'd stand a strong chance of getting Jim DeMint's endorsement! With DeMint's endorsement, Santorum could well win South Carolina, and if so, fairly-conservative and electoral-rich Florida follows shortly thereafter!
Santorum is not the choice of the GOP bigwigs. However, he isn't hated by them either. With success in SC and FL, Santorum could gain enough support from the more-moderate voters in the GOP, and the momentum could eventually give him the nomination. I don't see all this as being probable, but I don't see it as impossible by any means. Think about this. We could actually nominate a REAL conservative. With the un- enthusiastic but inevitably-certain support he'd receive from the GOP hierarchy, and the unequivocally-enthusiastic support he'd receive from Tea Parties and Evangelicals, he CAN beat Barack Obama!
This has been an un-paid, political announcement.
ps: I take Reagan's admonition to-heart that we should not speak ill of other Republicans. Should Romney or another GOP contender be nominated, I'll support him/her. Unlike some conservatives, I don't fear Mitt Romney. Romney's painted himself into such a tight, conservative corner he'll be hard-pressed to escape if elected. The thing I love about Santorum is that he's already in the corner where he truly belongs, and he doesn't pretend otherwise
